The Speed Myth: How America’s Love Affair With Fast Driving Is Fueled by Misconceptions

A recent study published in the Nature journal Communications Sustainability has challenged the notion that speeding is a necessary evil. Researchers at the University of Minnesota analyzed over 120 million vehicle trips across the United States and found that drivers who sped were only shaving off an average of 54 seconds per day.

This small time savings comes with significant costs, however. The study estimates that if all U.S. drivers adhered to posted speed limits, it could save an average of $22 million in fuel costs, 6.7 million gallons of fuel, and 57,000 metric tonnes of carbon dioxide every day. To put this into perspective, that’s equivalent to taking around 5.5 million passenger vehicles off the road.

The study suggests that drivers’ addiction to speed is not just a matter of convenience, but also a result of misconceptions about the benefits of speeding. “This is a ‘freebie’ in that it doesn’t really cost anyone anything to do,” said Rob Middleton, associate research scientist of mechanical engineering at the University of Michigan.

However, while driving more slowly may not require significant effort or investment, the benefits are multifaceted. By reducing our reliance on fossil fuels, we can help mitigate the effects of climate change and reduce our impact on the environment. As William Northrop, mechanical engineering professor at the University of Minnesota, noted, “If your goal is to shave one minute off your time, then you’ve got to drive fast. If your objective is to get to your destination safely and to save fuel, then you might drive slower than the speed limit.”

The study’s findings have important implications for electric vehicle (EV) adoption in particular. By driving more slowly, we can help reduce our reliance on internal combustion engines and pave the way for a cleaner, greener transportation system.

Ultimately, the benefits of slowing down are clear: saving money, reducing our carbon footprint, and helping to create a more sustainable future. As Middleton noted, “The fuel saved from driving more slowly still only represents a fraction of daily gasoline consumption in the U.S.” This is a stark reminder of the need for systemic change.

By acknowledging the benefits of driving at posted speed limits, we can begin to shift our cultural narrative around transportation and start building a cleaner, greener world. The question is: will we take this opportunity, or continue to prioritize speed above all else?
