As the world grapples with the devastating consequences of climate change, a new proposal from Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos threatens to further imperil our planet. The notion of placing millions of datacenters in orbit around Earth is being touted as a revolutionary solution for storing and processing vast amounts of digital information.

At first glance, the idea seems appealing: escape Earth’s limited landmass and tap into the virtually limitless capacity of space. However, experts warn that this plan would unleash unprecedented levels of pollution into our atmosphere, with potentially disastrous consequences for the environment.

The pollution generated by these datacenters would be staggering. Rare metals and other pollutants are injected into the stratosphere when satellites burn up upon re-entry, a process still poorly understood by scientists. The consequences could include exposure to higher levels of ultraviolet radiation, ozone layer depletion, and even destabilization of the climate crisis itself.

Steve Volz, former head of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s satellite office, cautions against filling the atmosphere with refuse from these datacenters. “You do not want to be filling up the atmosphere with refuse from these any more than you would want it coming from a smoke stack.”

The scale of this project is staggering: 100,000 satellites are expected in orbit within the decade, with some companies proposing networks of tens of thousands of datacenters. This would create an unprecedented source of light pollution, threatening the darkness of our night skies and potentially contributing to firefly and insect die-offs.

Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility (Peer), Earthjustice, and DarkSky International are opposing these plans, calling for a moratorium on new licenses for space datacenter projects. Their petition argues that the plans “violate federal law” and notes that Congress requires the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to assess whether such proposals serve the public interest.

We’re already facing unprecedented challenges on Earth: climate change, biodiversity loss. Does it make sense to embark on a project that promises to further imperil our atmosphere and ecosystems? The notion that we can simply “outsource” environmental problems to space ignores the fundamental reality of our interconnected world. Pollution from these datacenters would return to Earth, contributing to the very problems we’re trying to solve.

Advocates Ruskin Hartley and Cole Donovan emphasize the importance of regulatory bodies taking seriously their obligation to protect the environment. We need to ensure that these projects do not cause unnecessary harm to naturally dark skies – or the planet as a whole.

The clock is ticking: with thousands of satellites already in orbit, it’s imperative that we act swiftly to address this issue. Can we afford to ignore the warnings from experts and advocate groups? Our future depends on taking these threats seriously and acting now to mitigate them.
