Ostrich Eggshell Engravings Reveal Ancient Human Sophistication

The Unassuming Sophistics of Southern Africa's Ancient Past Archaeologists at the University of Bologna have unearthed evidence of sophisticated geometric designs etched into ostrich eggshells dating back over 60,000 years.

This discovery, published in PLOS One, challenges our understanding of early human cognition and suggests a more complex visual culture than previously thought.

Researchers analyzed 112 fragments of engraved ostrich eggshell from sites in South Africa and Namibia using geometric and statistical techniques to reconstruct the intricate patterns and relationships between lines.
