The partial collapse of its stone walls and tumbling rocks serve as a stark reminder of the region's seismic vulnerabilities. Built by General Kato Kiyomasa in 1607, Kumamoto Castle has stood for over 400 years.

Its imposing structure was once hailed as an "impregnable fortress" due to its resilience during the Satsuma Rebellion of 1877.
